The 350Z of fightsticks. July 9, 2010 ampsy05 It competes with the best of them and blows away everything underneath. I only use this control for Street Fighter and it's still worth it. At first I thought that this was the worst design of the fighting sticks and then I saw the Hori Premium VLX (Google it. It's awesome). I later found out that the design pays homage to the Japanese Vewlix arcade cabins. That changed my perspective of the red, white and black design.
The buttons are silky smooth. There is just the right amount of resistance and when pushing them they have a distinctive light clicking sound. (Before, I was playing on an old cheap control for my PSone and I'd hurt my fingers pressing on those buttons. They were so stiff, they'd jam up and were really loud because it would echo though the base.) As for the joystick, it is called a square gate and what that means is that when you trace the borders in the directions of the control, the shape forms a square, unlike the traditional circle in American arcade cabins. This kinda turned me off of the idea of the stick, but it doesn't affect game play too much. On the plus side, it makes pulling off a double flash kick a breeze.
This is a sturdy control. You can bang this bad boy up and not have to worry about the insides shaking out of place. One thing I'm not fond of is the weight, plus the rubber feet at the bottom of the control makes placing it on your lap pretty uncomfortable. Table required. Other than that it brings the arcade experience home, minus fighting a stranger for elbow space. If you can afford and justify the 130+ price tag it's well worth it even if you only play Street Fighter.
Doesn't work for PS2 games on a BC PS3! July 1, 2010 Samdalous 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Half the reason I bought this stick was to use it with my fighting games for the PS2 such as Guilty Gear, Street Fighter Alpha Collection, Capcom VS SNK 2, etc. I found out the hard way that it just won't work. This is unacceptable since the 360 version will work with original XBOX games on the 360. Madcatz says that it may be fixed with a system update, but since Sony has dropped the whole BC thing anyway, that will never happen. I'm extremely unhappy with this purchase and will most likely be selling it soon.
Excellent Fight Stick June 15, 2010 Daquan Wright (New Jersey) Are you looking to venture onto the stick scene and get more competitive in the world of SF? This stick is it. I literally never played in the arcades in my entire life and after seeing tournament players gameplay, I wanted the stick to pull off combos easier. I definitely think I've improved my game since buying the stick, just feels more comfortable to me...you have each button at your fingertip for precision and practice will make you perform combos flawlessly in time. I've got nothing against controllers or pads, I just wanted to go all out and get a TE fight stick since the SE version seems really bad. This stick's buttons present zero problems and it has a compartment in the back to store the lengthy cord. If you're cautious about whether spending $130 or $130+ on a stick is really worth it, just take my word for it and plunge. This stick will not disappoint those who are looking for a solid arcade feel and you'll have it for some time before it presents any problems in my opinion.
Mad Catz Is On To Something Here June 13, 2010 Susan B. Lacroix (NY, YSA) Pros: Fantastic stick with quality parts. Fighting feels greats with this arcade stick.
Cons: For how long this stick has been out, the price is a bit high.
I gotta say that there was a bit of skepticism because of previous experiences with Mad Catz products, but this stick is phenomenal. It has a good amount of weight, so it feels sturdy when on your lap, the compartment in which the remaining length of the USB cord can be stored is a welcomed addition.
This is my first arcade stick, so I was worried about whether or not the price tag would be worth it if I didn't like it, but I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The only downside to it is that for first time stick users, the learning curve is steep. It takes about a month, but it's honestly the superior choice for fighting games down the road (to me of course). It handles extremely well once you get accustomed to it.
Great presentation, flawed execution. May 27, 2010 Steve Burdette (VA, USA) I haven't been playing with this stick for very long so I will amend my review if I find new information on this. I also haven't played at an arcade since I was a kid so I'm going on my memory here. The presentation is amazing for this package, but it's a little bit off-putting when I first tried it out. The buttons are very sensitive but they don't feel as sturdy as arcade buttons. They almost feel loose as if you'll accidentally press them. There's no tactile feedback because they feel so sensitive. I don't know if these will last in the long-run but if they give out on me I'll come back and edit this review.
The sole purpose of this product is usability. The buttons work well (for now) but my main problem is the stick. It's sitting in a square box... meaning instead of being in a circle it sits in a square so when I'm playing Super Street Fighter and I do a combo: down, down-right, right. There's no way to tell where right is without constant practice. I found myself going past that point over and over and over and I was missing my combos. Am I remembering it incorrectly? Didn't the old arcade units have rounded movements for the sticks?
Anyway, I feel that a lot of people are giving this a 5/5 just to feel that they justified their purchase. I think that the quality is top notch, but it just doesn't feel right. After I play for a few hundred hours I'll see if I can get into the swing of things, and I'll come back and amend this review.
